Annunciation small
Annunciation
Betsey Ingram Whittlesey Window (artist: Louis Comfort Tiffany, installed 1910)

This window depicts the Annuciation, the revelation to Mary by the archangel Gabriel that she would conceive a child to be born the Son of God.  It calls to mind the ancient Angelus prayer, a traditional devotion used morning, noon, and evening in honor of the Incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ. The devotion gets its name from the first word of the prayer in Latin. From Easter Day through the day of Pentecost, the Regina Coeli is used instead of the Angelus.
The angel of the Lord declared unto Mary * And she conceived by the Holy Spirit.

Hail Mary full of grace, the Lord is with thee Blessed art thou among women, and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus. Holy Mary, Mother of God, Pray for us sinners now and at the hour of our death. Amen.

Behold the handmaid of the Lord * Be it done unto me according to thy word.

Hail Mary full of grace, ...

And the WORD was made flesh * And dwelt among us.

Hail Mary full of grace, ...

Pray for us, O Holy Mother of God * That we may be made worthy of the promises of Christ.

We beseech thee, O Lord, pour thy grace into our hearts, that we who have known the incarnation of thy Son Jesus Christ, announced by an angel to the Virgin Mary, may by his cross and passion be brought to the glory of his resurrection; who liveth and reigneth with thee, in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.  (BCP proper for the incarnation p188)
Located on the north side of the nave, this window gets indirect light.  The colors of the angel and the Blessed Virgin Mary are stunning and draw the eye to the diagonal.
