Truth & Justice
Crozier-Williams Window (artist: Louis Comfort Tiffany, installed 1910)

This window depicts allegories of Truth (holding torch, sword, crown of flowers, and key necklace) and Justice (holding sword and scales). Located on the East side of the south transept, this window gets brilliant morning light.  The scarlet colors are a rich feast for the eyes.  The two figures look like they take their mission seriously!

Note how the allegory of Truth compares with the same figure in the Tiffany rose window of the First Unitarian Church of Cincinnati (bottom of page, with poor resolution), and at the First Congregational Church in Toledo (looking more female).  Another one is at the Keene Unitarian Universalist Church.  There they describe eight Truth windows known to be made.  The representational features of the allegory are described:
"The window contains an androgynous figure, holding a torch which signifies Truth's illuminating power, and a sword, representing the practical embodiment of truth in laws, institutions . . .Around it's neck is a key, symbolizing the ability to unlock and get beyond barriers of ignorance. The wreath of roses? Well, Truth can be as sweet as a rose and as painful as the thorns, both to those who speak it and to those who listen!"
This window is dedicated to Charles Augustus Williams, a whaling merchant. Williams Memorial Park at Hempstead and Broad Streets in New London is also named for him.
