Transitioning to a New Priest-in-Charge
We pray for a full-time Priest-in-Charge (with the potential to be called as Rector) who will build on our 300 years as a parish and lead us into the future as a vibrant community. The Priest-in-Charge for St James will be a caring counselor, thoughtful teacher, capable manager, and collaborative leader who will help us to build the church of the future. We seek a Priest-in-Charge who will:
- Love and accept who we are now and lead us to become who we are called to be for the future
- Be excited about diversity of all kinds and embrace our urban multi-cultural community
- Have a vision for enfolding new families into the congregation
- Be willing to extend pastoral care to all ages
- Teach and preach, weaving scripture, tradition, and reason into faith formation
- Encourage all members to pursue leadership and service in the church
The Priest-in-Charge will enjoy a broad range of ministry activities including preaching, teaching, leadership of outreach ministries, fellowship, pastoral care, partnering with city non-profits, and presiding at worship services including but not limited to: Spoken 8:00 a.m. Sunday service, 10:00 a.m. Sunday service featuring exceptional music with organ and choir.
We have deep roots and open hearts and we are praying for a Priest-in-Charge who will lead in that same spirit. The parish is shaped by respect, transparency, and shared ministry and we seek a priest of integrity, compassion, theological depth, and mission-driven leadership to grow our congregation, welcome new families, and deepen our faith.
The Priest-in-Charge for St James will be:
––Loving: someone who respects diversity be it race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, ability, age, socio-economic status; is compassionate and kind, and is committed to providing pastoral care to, and fellowship with, our parishioners.
–Collaborative: a good listener who acts on input from the congregation; bilingual (Spanish) and/or
Latino/Hispanic cultural competency is a plus
–Faithful: a person of deep and abiding faith; be able to navigate the complexities of partnership while being rooted in their call from God
–Administrative: have strong technology, communication, organizational, and administrative skills
–Creative: finds ways to invite more people to church, including families, and weave them into the St James community
We extend our faith beyond our walls through deep commitments to serving neighbors facing food and housing insecurity. We manage a busy food pantry, a thrift shop that serves shoppers of all income levels, and a lay eucharistic ministry. Located in the heart of New London, Connecticut, St James offers a large, historic, well-maintained rectory with easy access to transportation hubs.
